Water Tanks or the Atlantis Rainwater Harvesting System.

When investing in a Rainwater Harvesting System, there are many factors not commonly discussed.

The Catchment:

This is effectively the area upon which rain falls and is directed towards your storage system. With Above ground tanks the site chosen to place the tank will determine which guttering downpipes are able to be directed into the tank. In many cases this restricts your available catchment to a small area of roof. Therefore, during a rain event you are only capturing a small proportion of your available water.

The Atlantis System is designed so that all roof water can be directed towards the Atlantis Filtration Unit and then filters into the System. Also, surface runoff from pathways, driveways and grassed areas can also be captured, diverted, filtered and stored. This is achieved using Atlantis Drainage Cell and / or Strip Filter Pipe.

Filtration

Roofs that are commonly the source of Catchment for rainwater are also one of the least maintained areas of any building. Dirt, Air Borne Debris, Leaves, Sticks, and all manner of soot and animal waste are deposited on the surface. In most situations the only filtration provided is a single screen where water collects above the storage and is set at a level unable to be checked without the use of a ladder. This system is often left unchecked and can easily block up during Rain. An Atlantis Large Filtration Unit is designed to filter out debris down to 180 microns, flow at 20 L per sec and will accept up to 4 x 150mm Inlets from roof or surface catchment. The filter is installed below ground, with an aluminium lid, set at surface level. Inside is the first stage filter basket, which is lifted out, and debris removed. In the base of the unit is the secondary filter media encased in mesh. This secondary filtration media can be removed and cleaned as required

First Flush Devices

The addition of a first flush device is to divert debris away from the tank. This is commonly debris washed into another downpipe, which fills first and then the water is directed towards the tank. Some devices are set above the tank and therefore a ladder and collection bucket need to be used to climb and clean out the unit. Other first flush systems, which direct water into a pipe, have a constant drip system to slowly empty the water and the debris is caught inside the pipe. These systems can be difficult and time consuming to maintain as debris can be lodged inside and difficult to remove. Maintenance of these systems should be considered.

Gutter Covers

There are many different types of Guttering cover systems available. Consideration should be given as to the maintenance of these systems and their relative cost.

Downpipe Diverters

These systems involve fitting a diverter to downpipes that allow debris to be washed out of the unit while water flows through. These units can be effective and should have regular checks for blockages. The Atlantis Downpipe Filter is the most effective design as it has baffles and screens for better filtration.

Healthy Water Storage.

In the Atlantis system all water is triple filtered and then fills the underground tank. A naturally occurring active bio-mass establishes on the matrix cells helping to maintain water quality. Maintenance is easy as the filter unit is at ground level with a removable filter basket. The system is a cool healthy environment emulating the natural water cycle. Placing standpipes easily connects pumps and the whole system has minimum visual impact on the landscape.

Natural Evapotranspiration

The Atlantis Rainwater Harvesting System placed under garden/ landscape areas creates the natural process of water breathing through the ground (evapotranspiration). Soil moisture is such that the garden above the tank footprint remains fertile and promotes the healthy growth of plants and turf.

Stormwater Runoff / Overflow

After the rainwater fills the Atlantis Tank a permeable overflow pipe (Atlantis Strip Filter Pipe) can be used to infiltrate water into the base of garden beds as it flows towards the discharge point. This allows many more litres of fresh rainwater to effectively irrigate your gardens as well as reducing the amount of stormwater that flows to the street.

Designing your Rainwater System

Considerations of the land contours and drainage outlets, connection of roofwater, placement of services, connection of pump systems and intended water  use. As the Atlantis System is created using modular cells any shape of tanking is achievable. The System also allows for the installation under driveway pavements and hard surface areas.
